The St. Louis Flu and Chiropractic History

Spanish flu epidemic 1918

In 1918 an illness plagued the U.S. that would have made Anthrax seem like the hiccups.

That year over a million people died with what was called the St. Louis Flu. If you got the St. Louis Flu in 1918, it was certain that you were going to die.

Another occurrence in 1918 was that Chiropractic, the only American born health care profession, was close to extinction only 23 years after its discovery. It seems that at that time the laws against slander were extremely lenient and medical doctors were allowed to openly attack Chiropractic without any regard to the truth or the best interest of the patients.

Because the medical profession was making it so hard to have a practice, Chiropractors were making mostly house calls. In 1918, Chiropractors in Wisconsin began going door-to-door adjusting anyone who had St. Louis Flu. As a result, an amazing thing occurred.

Not a single person with the St. Louis Flu who was adjusted died!

Chiropractors got fantastic results from influenza patients while those under medical care died like flies all around.  Statistics reflect a most amazing, almost miraculous state of affairs.  The medical profession was practically helpless with the flu victims but in America during this flu epidemic, chiropractors seemed able to do no wrong.

In Davenport, Iowa, 50 medical doctors treated 4,953 cases, with 274 deaths.  In the same city, 150 chiropractors including students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic, treated 1,635 cases with only one death.  In the state of Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths – a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases – a loss of one patient out of every 789.

National figures show that 1,142 chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 886. Reports show that in New York City, during the influenza epidemic of 1918, out of every 10,000 cases medically treated, 950 died; and in every 10,000 pneumonia cases medically treated 6,400 died.  These figures are exact, for in that city these are reportable diseases.

The news about Chiropractic swept across the state of Wisconsin and eventually the whole country.  Within a short period of time it became so well known that Chiropractic was the best defense against the St. Louis Flu, it saved the profession of Chiropractic.

After the St. Louis Flu had left and Chiropractic began to take off, the Medical Association realized it had now failed in its efforts to eliminate the Chiropractic profession.  As a last ditch effort, the state medical boards began offering Chiropractors medical licenses.  They figured, if you can’t beat them – better control them. NOT A SINGLE CHIROPRACTOR TOOK THEIR OFFER!

Chiropractic is not now, and never was, a cure for St. Louis Flu, Anthrax, back pain, headaches, or cancer.

Chiropractic simply removes pressure, pinching, tension, and interference from the brain stem, spinal cord, and nerves.  This maximizes your body’s God-given strength and its ability to heal and protect itself without the use of dangerous drugs or surgery.  Chiropractic simply allows your body to be as healthy as it can be.

So, during flu season, the most effective way to strengthen your immune system and prevent the disease is to increase (not decrease) your adjusting schedule.  In addition, warn others about the dangers of the flu shot and tell them the Chiropractic Truth!
