Pearl #6 – Don’t Let Life Be One Big Headache

Never had I seen so many people suffering from headaches until I came to Singapore. Is this because I came from chilled out places like California and Spain? Maybe … a tiny bit perhaps … but mostly not. It is getting worse too so this question definitely needs answering. Why?

Well, the head and neck are the most vulnerable parts of your body, especially the spine inside your neck. Of course, the neck supports your super-heavy head whilst allowing it to turn and nod. But what gets forgotten is that it must allow the free-flow of nerves through your spinal cord back and forth between your brain and the rest of your body.

Besides being a pain in the neck, dysfunction at this point very commonly causes headaches and migraines and, as with any pain, this is a sure sign that something needs changing. The most common cause of neck dysfunction in Singapore, and it is epidemic in proportion, is the worsening posture of the population.

Remember, your head is heavy, very heavy (think bowling ball). It gets heavier when it is held forward. If you use your computer with your head stuck forward 2 or 3 inches, your head triples in weight (think three bowling balls). And this must be supported by your neck and shoulders.

But why the headaches? Simple – the body is trying to protect its most important part – the nervous system.

If you carry your head forward for many years, you will increase your rate of spinal arthritis. It will cause disc damage and affect the muscles and tendons which will become robbed of oxygen and stiffen. Importantly, it will change the flow of blood to the spinal cord itself and gradually the changes become permanent. This is why many individuals cannot correct it themselves.

Of course, this problem is exacerbated by other stresses of life; deadlines, family issues and over commitment. How about pain? Yes, pain causes stress which causes more pain. Now we have a vicious circle and only change can break the spiral.

Our necks are the weakest link and that’s why stress goes there. By improving the function and shape of our necks, headaches and tension are reduced virtually every time.

Chiropractic care won’t reduce the stress of your busy life but it certainly can help your ability to cope with it. And, really importantly, it does so without resorting to dangerous drugs and surgery.

P.S. Do you remember how heavy I said your head was earlier in this blog? Look back up if not!
