When you’re in pain, how many times have you had to decipher what the doctor is telling you and still remain confused about your condition?
How many times have you been told there’s nothing they can do about back and neck pain and what about headaches and fatigue? Wouldn’t you want to know for sure where your symptoms originate and understand what your body is telling you?
Unfortunately, we have not been taught to listen to our body correctly. Whilst many of our symptoms are simply the body bringing us back to a healthy state of balance, they are generally misunderstood and seen as bad. Most of us take a pill and get some temporary relief but in the long run this must surely allow things to deteriorate.
Consider this: when we have a ‘temperature’, this is the body killing the infection. If this is the case and the body is trying to correct the problem, is it really a good idea to bring the temperature down?
Likewise, our back or neck pain is just the body trying to help us. It is telling us that something is wrong. And, because our nervous system is protected inside the spine, you can be sure that it is going to tell us when we have a spinal problem. It expresses its urgency with pain.
Pain is one of our basic reflexes that is there to protect us. So if we experience neck or back pain, what should we do?
Of course we want it to go away, but in all likelihood we would be far better off if we found out what is the actual cause and addressing it properly. Health is not an event but a life long process and our advice is to get the basics right early and then be proactive. You could, quite literally, save yourself from decades of arthritis and failing health later on.
Most of those poor people in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s we see shuffling about, obviously in terrible discomfort with pain and arthritis, could have had a completely different life. Joints that go out of alignment wear out. The most common debilitating condition in Singapore is spinal degeneration and most of it can be avoided. If we recognize misalignment early and correct it, it can literally save you from decades of gradual deconditioning.
First, however, we need to establish the real cause. It may be posture, loss of alignment, a repetitive strain type injury or the result of an accident. But, one thing is certain – there is a cause!
An important thing that you will learn is that the body is a self-healing mechanism with multitudes of natural reflexes that continuously bring us back to a healthy equilibrium. When the nervous system, which regulates everything, has some form of interference these mechanisms can be disturbed and we move away from health.
