That Popping Sound During an Adjustment

You know the sound. That pop, crack, or click that happens the moment a chiropractor adjusts your spine. Some patients love it. Some flinch a little the first time they hear it. Here at our office, it's one of the questions we get asked most, especially from first time patients. Is that normal? Is something breaking in there?
Turns out, that sound is completely normal. And honestly, it's a lot less mysterious than most people think
So, What's Actually Making That Noise?

The sound comes from something called cavitation. It's the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. Your joints are surrounded by a capsule filled with fluid, and that fluid contains dissolved gases, mostly nitrogen. When a joint is adjusted, the sudden change in pressure inside the capsule causes tiny gas bubbles to form and then collapse. That collapse is what makes the popping sound.
Nothing is breaking. Nothing is grinding out of place. It's just gas releasing from fluid, quickly. Kind of like opening a can of soda, if you want a simple comparison. We explain this to almost every new patient who walks through our doors, and it usually gets a laugh once they realize how simple the science actually is.

Why Doesn't Every Adjustment Make a Sound?
Here's something a lot of patients don't realize. Not every adjustment produces an audible pop, and that's completely fine too. The sound isn't what makes an adjustment effective. It's

really just a byproduct of the gas release, and sometimes that release happens quietly or not at all, depending on the joint, the technique, and even how much gas happens to be in that spot at that particular moment.
So if you get adjusted and hear nothing, don't worry. Your chiropractor isn't doing anything wrong. The therapeutic benefit, better joint mobility, reduced nerve irritation, improved function, happens whether or not there's a sound to go with it. Our team focuses on what your body actually needs in the moment, not on whether it makes noise.
Can You Crack the Same Joint Too Much?
This one comes up a lot. After a joint cavitates, the gas needs time to redissolve back into the fluid before it can pop again. That process usually takes somewhere around twenty minutes. So no, you can't just crack the same spot over and over for a quick fix. Your body needs that reset time.
This is also part of why we don't just chase the loudest pop. A skilled adjustment targets the joint that actually needs correction, not the one that will make the most satisfying sound. That precision is really what good chiropractic care comes down to.
Should the Sound Ever Worry You?
Generally, no. The pop itself is not a sign of injury or damage. What matters more is how you feel afterward. Most of our patients feel looser, lighter, and more mobile within minutes. If you ever experience sharp pain during or after an adjustment, that's worth mentioning to us right away, but the sound alone isn't a red flag.
It's worth noting too that the audible crack can feel oddly satisfying. There's actual research suggesting that sound and immediate relief are linked in people's minds, even psychologically. But the real work being done, the joint realignment, the nervous system calming down, the improved range of motion, that's happening whether you hear a pop or not.
What Your Ears Are Actually Telling You
That crack or pop you hear during an adjustment is just gas bubbles releasing pressure inside a joint capsule. It's harmless, it's common, and it's not a requirement for a good adjustment.
